La joyería/The jeweller's

Good morning! Some days ago seeing a jeweller’s ad in a magazine reminded me what an English class mate told me many years ago and that I’d like to tell you today. This girl was working in one of her cousins’ jeweller’s in the centre of the city. On my way to and from my work I used to go along that street where the shop was and I used to see, from the outside, very smart gentlemen and ladies choosing jewels which I thought it was a very amusing and pleasant activity. One day after class I told my class mate and she told me a little big secret of that jeweller’s.

She told me that many days the ladies, the very rich ones living in that area, used to go to the shop to be shown all the jewels they had. They used to spend a very nice time choosing rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, etc…My class mate opened them a kind of file where she carefully noted down the name of the lady, her husband’s name and all the jewels she had chosen. What for? Very easy: first the lady spent a very nice time choosing jewels and then her husband when arriving his wife’s birthday, saint day, anniversary or any other important date he only had to go to the jeweller’s ask for his wife’s file and choose one of the jewels previously chosen by her. Easy and impossible to make a wrong choice!, what a good sales technique! Did you know it? Do you know of any other similar technique?

  1. kind of like today's "wish list" on some on line stores! at least that way you get what you want - but jewelry can be very expensive so rather frivolous I think - but then I do not wear jewelry - have never cared much for it and only wear my rings.
