Ese es el secreto del éxito"/Free printable: Put your heart, mind and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret to success

Good morning and good wednesday! It's been weeks since the last time I offered you a free printable and I had kept this one because I love its message: "Put your heart, mind and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret to success". I have no idea whose is this quote but I agree with it completely. I hope you like it as much as I do. Hugs

La república de Irlanda y el quilt cadena irlandesa / The Irish Republic and the Irish chain quilt

Good monday everybody! Some weeks ago I showed you here the top of the Irish chain quilt that I've sewn and that I'll quilt when winter arrives. This isn't the first quilt I've sewn but it is the biggest. Some years ago I sewed an appliqué one and the size was about a sofa/couch quilt (I can't remember the exact measurements) which is still in the to-do list for quilting and binding. Weeell, straight to the point. I chose the design for this Irish chain quilt for two reasons: first, because it was an easy design for a novice sewer and second and most important because I have a soft spot for anything Irish. I can't avoid it.

Many years ago (in 1.992) I spent two weeks in Dublin (travelling abroad ended when I "married" Mr. Mortgage, a veeery jealous husband jajaja). I went there to practise English and get to know a little bit about the Irish Republic. I stayed in an University campus apartment and went to English classes every morning. I didn't know much about the Irish Republic or the Irish people but as I had already been three times in England I thought they had a similar way of being. But I was wrong. For me they have the best of the English people and the best of the Spanish people. In general they are spontaneous, open and sociable. Well you can imagine I had a really great time in those two weeks I spent there and they left me so nice memories that even after so many years I wanted to have something to remind me the Irish Republic and…..now I have it!

Good friday! how many plans do you have for this weekend? I hope you've got a weekend full of plans or rest, as you please. I'm really enjoying spring in Valencia, this year we're enjoying this season for a change!. We usually have summer until one day temperatures start to drop and winter (which it's not usually very cold) starts and the other way round, suddenly temperatures start to rise and....summer has started. But we now have quite cool early mornings and nights and some hot temperatures by midday, so that's great. Well, after the weather forecast jajaja I offer you the three weekly tutorials. That necktie necklace is beautiful and you can even recycle any old one you could have at home so it will cost you almost nothing

Good morning and good wednesday! as I was telling you in today's post title: I have a doubt about my hexie quilt. I started sewing them mixing the solid blue jean colour outside and the blue floral fabric for the inside and the cream fabric around them but I think it's a boring combination. So yesterday I started to "play" trying to get ideas of a more cheerful combination as the idea I have about the final result is the one you can see above.

¿Sugerencias?. Muchas gracias por vuestra ayuda

What do you think of the floral hexies combination? And the solid cream colour with the floral in the centre?. I'm asking for your opinion because I remember once seeing an hexie quilt with a lot of sewing work but a very bad colour combination and the result was really ugly and as it is a hand sewing quilt with a lot of work I'd like to get the perfect combination. Any suggestions?. Thank you very much for your help

La historia del pintalabios/ The history of lipstick

Buen lunes!

Good monday! have you ever thought about that lipstick you apply every morning when getting ready just before going out from home? it can seem a non important daily custom but it has quite a history behind, history I have copied from the web www.bellasugar.com and have translated into Spanish. It's very interesting and I hope you like it!

www.ellahoy.es

Lipstick is probably the most provocative of cosmetics. It's bright, it draws attention to your mouth, and it's loaded with connotations of sensuality and femininity. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that lipstick's been around for about as long as people have been adorning themselves and that some form of it has existed in almost every culture. But rouge's journey from prehistory to the present hasn't been as smooth as a cream formula. In fact, lipstick's been dangerous, vilified, and controversial. So to see how this makeup-bag staple has changed over the centuries, keep reading.

Antigua Sumeria/ Ancient Sumeria

The first recorded lipstick devotee, Ancient Ur's Queen Schub-ad, enhances her lips with a reddish formula made from lead and iron-rich rocks.

Antiguo Egipto/ Ancient Egypt

Egyptians are wild about lipstick and use red ochre, carmine, and other dyes to create a variety of shades, from tangerine to pink to black — proving that the black lipstick trend is nothing new.

Antigua Grecia/ Ancient Greece

In Ancient Greece, lipstick is considered a cosmetic exclusively for prostitutes. Ladies of the evening redden their lips with formulas containing everything from red wine to mulberries and seaweed.

Antigua Roma/ Ancient Rome

Roman ladies have such complicated toilettes that they require an ornatrix, or manager, for their teams of cosmetic slaves. Their lipsticks of choice are deep purple-reds. Men also wear lipstick as much as women, and different shades come to serve as social status indicators.

Oriente próximo medieval/ The Medieval Middle East

In 1000 CE, famed Moorish cosmetologist Abulcasis invents the first solid lipstick using specially shaped molds.

El imperio azteca/ The Aztec Empire

The Aztecs grind up cochineal beetles to make vibrant dye, but they also use cochineal to paint lips and faces a deep shade of incarnadine.

Queen Elizabeth I loves lipstick, and her personal recipe consists of cochineal, gum Arabic, egg whites, and fig milk. Elizabeth's court also invents the first lip liner by mixing plaster of Paris with red pigment, then leaving the stuff to dry in the sun.

Estados Unidos/ Early America

Even the first first lady, Martha Washington, is fond of a cherry-colored pout. Her personal recipe sounds a little like a particularly gross tinted lip balm. It's made with beeswax, lard, sugar, almond oil, alkanet, raisins, wax from sperm whales' heads, and balsam.

During the women's voting movement in America, suffragettes wore red lipstick as a sign of power during protests. Beauty brands like Elizabeth Arden even created special shades to support the cause.

With the advent of World War II, female factory workers have income of their own. Lipstick sales take off and the product loses any remaining associations it had with "low-class" women. Even patrician actresses like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn wear scarlet lips.

2.007

In a study, the Campaign for Safer Cosmetics finds that a third of brand-name lipsticks it tested have more lead than is legal. Cosmetics companies dismiss the claims and insist their products are tested and safe. And the controversy rages on.

2.014

In a recent poll of the most iconic beauty trends, Marilyn Monroe's red lipstick came out on top. The crimson trend won over the smoky eye and false lashes.

Tres preguntas / Three questions

Good wednesday! how's your week? I hope a not too busy week, think that in a couple of days weekend starts, that we're in spring and it feels like enjoying it.

Relating with the topic of the post of last monday (about becoming 50 and reconsider things) I was thinking about asking your opinion about the topics I speak in the blog, about the tutorials, if you'd like to suggest any change from which we could all benefit so therefore I'd like to make you these three questions:

1. ¿Te gusta el blog tal cual está? / Do you like the blog as it is?

Los 50 / The big five

www.teinteresa.es
Good morning and good monday! These days I'm thinking about that in exactly three months and fifteen days I'll be.....50! I can't believe it!. Does it happen to you too that when birthdays come and go one day you look at yourself in the mirror and think, “That's not  possible, it can't be real that I'm going to be that age”? that's what's happening to me.

No sé si sabré explicar cómo me sentía.

I remember the night before being 18. We were spending summer holidays in a village in Castellón and that night I had gone out with some friends. It was late when I came back home, my family was sleeping so I went to bed but I couldn’t sleep: the following day I was going to have the legal age!. I got up silently and went to the living room. No noise. I opened the window and looked outside. I don't know if I'll be able to explain how I felt. Everything seemed different to me, it was as if the following day everything were to be different although not much was going to change. I  was excited and at the same time with the excitement of going from teenage to adult age in some hours. And more than 30 years have passed since that night!.

It isn’t obviously the case now but coming to 50 really makes me reconsider many things. It’s like a computer reset, annoying but necessary. To those of you about to be 50, do you think the same as me? Which feelings or ideas cross your mind bearing in mind your next birthday?. And to those of you who already are 50 or 50+, what did you think in that moment? Did the idea of becoming 50 make you reconsider things in your lives too?

Nunca es tarde para aprender patchwork / It's never late to learn quilting

Good morning and good wednesday to all! I found this story in the Youtube and wanted to share it with you. It talks about a shepherd from Cetina in Aragón retired in 1.995 is enjoying quilting now he is 76 years old. He's learned the technique through his daughters, owners of a quilting shop. In the video you'd be able to see the wonderful things he has sewn, bearing in mind his age. Sorry the video is in Spanish but there you'll see him, his wife and their daughters and what he has sewn. An example!

Un poco de costura y una duda / A little bit of sewing and a doubt

Good morning! How about your weekend? I hope you've enjoyed it. Today I'd like to show you some things I've been doing some feast days in Easter and some mornings/afternoons during the weekends:

First I made a necklace with the chain of a bag given with a magazine some time ago (I didn't like the bag but kept the chain), a piece of fabric bought in Creative Fair, two fake pearls which were part of a pair of earrings that I liked most without them, a bead from another necklace and I recycled the light batting from an old tie and this is the result:

And I've been sewing finishing the Irish chain quilt top, the size is 1.30 m x 1.77 m. It's all sewn by hand except by the 9 patch which I preferred to bring the strips to a woman to machine sewn them and then I cut them sewing them in the 9 patch. I'll start quilting it in autumm.

Gracias!

And now my doubt referring to my next quilt already cut and ready to sew. I'm going to sew a quilt with the "Grandmother's garden" pattern and as always my big doubt is the colour combination. Here you have the hexies photograph already cut and on the solid fabric. the number in blue pen is the number of hexies and I've written a letter to be able to identify the fabrics. To all quilting fans please any suggestions? opinions? any help would be more than welcome. Thanks!
